Did you Know?
In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages (or Medieval Period) lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
"Peasant" food was made up mainly of cabbage, beans, eggs, oats and brown bread. Cheese, bacon or poultry was a special treat when it could be bought or traded for.
Everyone from peasant to king drank ale or beer. Wine from France and Italy was available for those with money.
The more money you had, the better you ate. More meat, game white bread, spices and rich sauces were available to those that could afford it.
If you lived near water, fish was probably a regular part of your diet.
A typical feast menu might include:
-
Freshly baked white bread with bowls of whipped butter
- Sugared Almonds
- Honey-Mustard Eggs
- Chilled Strawberry (or other fruit) Soup
- Pottages (a soup of meat and vegetables)
-
A roasted animal of some sort - ranging from chickens and pigs to peacocks and seals
- Fish, especially eel, tench, or tuna
- Turkey legs
-
Pork pot pies
But don't forget
to bring your own knife, spoon and mug - only the lord or host of the feast had utensils, and forks weren't in general use yet!
