Breast Cancer Awareness Month

September 29, 2016

What is breast cancer awareness month?

October is breast cancer awareness month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds towards additional Pink Ribbon Cutoutresearch for a cure. The first breast cancer awareness month was observed in 1985 and in 1993 the pink ribbon solidified its standing as the symbol of breast cancer awareness. It is estimated that nearly 250,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, and of those more than 200,000 of them will survive their fights. Women are encouraged to create an early detection plan and practice healthy habits to reduce risk factors for breast cancer and other illnesses. Physical activity, as little as 30 minutes per day, a healthy diet, and breast-feeding can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Start your plan today by visiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is one of the leading health threats to women. Early detection through self-exam and mammography is the first step in beating this killer. Breast cancer occurs mostly in women, but men can develop the disease as well. One in 1,000 men in the United states will develop breast cancer in his lifetime.

The most common breast cancers begin in the glands that make breast milk and in the ducts that carry it. Many types of breast cancer can cause lumps in the breast, but it is important to be familiar with other signs of breast cancer as well. You should always contact your health care professional if you are concerned.

Many cells in the body are able to regenerate over time, including cells in the breast. Sometimes during regeneration, the DNA in the cell gets damaged, or old and damaged cells do not die as they are supposed two. When those damaged cells stick around, they build up to become a tumor. A tumor is considered cancerous (malignant) when it invades the surrounding tissues. When that tumor is even more aggressive, it moves to other parts of the body in a process called metastasis. How you can help?

Monetary donations are a great start in helping the fight against breast cancer. Choosing to donate provides mammograms, breast health services, education, and support for those in need. Donations to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation provides funding for cancer research worldwide focusing on tumor biology, genetics, and metastasis. The National Breast Cancer Foundation focuses its spending on programs that include providing mammograms, breast health services, education, and support to women in need.

Each year, millions of people give their time, energy, and resources to help the pink cause. Hosting a benefit concert, competing in a race or fun walk, or even a lemonade stand are great ways to start fundraising. Every dollar counts when it comes to raising awareness. How men can help support?

Guys, while it is possible for you to develop cancer, it is much more likely that a woman in your life will develop the disease. Being a supportive partner, caregiver or friend is imperative to your loved ones’ fight. It’s as simple as reassuring her of your continued love, proving moral support or even gathering information about treatments, doctors and alternatives. Remember that her energy is likely to be low when going through treatment. Take the time to complete those pesky chores around the house. Make her dinner - and if she doesn’t eat it, don’t be offended. Lack of appetite is common too. For more information about how you can support your loved ones, check out Men Against Breast Cancer, organization designed to provide targeted support services that educate and empower men to be effective caregivers when cancer strikes. Woman’sDay features an article about five men who became advocates for the cause.
