Did you Know?

Pinatas have been around for a very long time. Historians believe that while in China, Marco Polo saw colorful paper figures of animals that were filled with seeds. The seeds spilled out when struck with a stick and the figure was then burned and it's ashes collected for good luck. It's believed that Polo brought the idea to Italy.

By the 14th century the figures were known by the Italian name pignatta ("fragile pot") and associated with Lent. The custom spread to Spain where a clay pot was wrapped in colorful paper and decorations and broken open, again with a stick.

Missionaries brought the custom to the New World where they found a similar Aztec tradition in which a decorated, filled pot was broken at the feet of a statue of the Aztec god of war. The missionaries used the pinata to teach Christian religion.

A traditional Mexican pinata is a ball shape with seven conical point to represent the seven deadly sins, the colorful decorations represented the temptations of the world. The blindfold represented blind faith in God and the treats that were released when the pinata was broken the sweet reward of heaven after defeating temptation.

There is a song to sing while someone is trying to open the Piñata:
Hit it, hit it, hit it.
Don't lose your aim.
Because if you lose it.
You lose the way.
You hit it once.
You hit it twice.
You hit it three times.
And your time is up.
