By: Lucy Crawford
Your backyard is the perfect spot to celebrate Mardi Gras, especially if you want to Invite all the neighbors and their pooches. So deck your dog out in the best Mardi Gras accessories and make sure to pick up a few costume pieces for yourself as well and get ready to host the perfect carnival.
Decorations
For those not actually in the Bayou State, you can still create a majestic backyard in Louisiana with the right decorations. Choose a kit that includes banners and streetlight decorations to set the New Orleans mood. Incorporating a green, purple, and gold color scheme will also create a Mardi Gras feel around the backyard.
Food & Drinks
Crawfish is the natural food choice for a Mardi Gras party but not every homeowner can get their hands on the little suckers. Consider serving your choice of food and drinks on crawfish tableware that will keep in step to the Mardi Gras theme. Guests will appreciate the decorations even if crawfish isn’t on the menu. Hurricane glasses are all the rage in New Orleans so consider serving festive drinks to both your guests and their dogs in plastic hurricane glasses.
Accessories
What would Mardi Gras be without lots of beads? Make sure to have plenty of beads on hand for neighbors to wear as well as their four-legged friends. These rainbow beads make a great addition to any party. Throw some on yourself as well as around those dogs who don’t mind getting dressed up. Other fun ways to dress up for the party is to have these smaller masks on hand that will fit nicely on medium to large sized dogs. For those dogs that aren’t into dressing up, consider attaching this feathered headband to their collar.
Activities
A costume contest for both people and their dogs will enable you to incorporate royalty into the Mardi Gras theme. Create a walkway for neighbors to parade with their pooch and have judges rank the best costume. Crown both with a jeweled headpiece as well as a robe that will tie into the party theme. Consider having multiple costume categories including Best Dressed, Best Pair, and Best Overall for an even better time.
While your guests may spend most of the time on the back patio or deck, keep in mind their four-legged friends will be trapesing on your lawn. It’s important to protect them from uninvited guests. Since most animals are sensitive to insecticides, it may be best to stick to organic pest control.
Music
Don’t forget to jazz things up with plenty of jazz music playing over outdoor speakers. Create your own playlist and decorate with these jazz players in order to finish off the Mardi Gras theme.
There are plenty of ways to create an outdoor Mardi Gras party that will be fun without breaking the budget. And while a pup party may seem pretty far-fetched, your guests will thank you fur everything when it’s over.
